ahoy matey!

(gap striped cotton scoop neck, thrifted polyester navy vest, 7's high-waisted wide leg jeans)
i hate to admit it, but this vest sat idle and tucked away in my closet for many months until i found some guidance from jessie, my live in fashion consultant-- pair it with stripes! she said.  (when in doubt, throw some stripes into the mix! is jessie's latest styling motto)...though stripes have been big for some time, she's right... and  i wouldn't have thought of that.  i think it did the trick!

i feel slightly like a sailor in this outfit, but i love it, and i embrace my inner deckhand with gusto.  (i did in fact grow up sailing with my father on a twentyfive footer upstate!) ...and the nautical theme is one that rarely goes out of style.  i refrained from pairing it with my long ship pendant necklace, though i did consider it.  that would have definitely taken it too far.

this vest was found this past fall at a great little vintage consignment shop in greenpoint brooklyn called 'kill devil hill.'  the shop is a riot with its vintage candy selection and stuffed gopher display, and jessie and i had fun pawing through their dress and denim selection.  we found this navy polyester vest that happened to fit me just right.  we also picked up a bottle of homemade vanilla extract on our way out--a treat being made and sold by one of the shop girls.  man, i love brooklyn.

is it spring yet?

despite the heavy snow that we had earlier this week (or maybe because of it, actually) i have decided that i am ready for spring. bring it on. all of it. the dresses, sandals, tanktops, sunglasses and massive amounts of sunscreen.

maybe that's why i felt like wearing shorts, even though i had to add tights and a sweater, since the weather isn't quite cooperating with my wishes.

04 March 2009

so here's a new-to-me favorite of my winter wardrobe. roommate jessie and i had a 'gals clothing swap' some months back and it was a total success. there were roughly 15 gals in our place, with all their give-away clothes draped on every available surface in our loft. by the end of it, we all walked away with some awesome new second-hand duds, and we wound up donating NINE huge trash bags full of clothes to the needy as well. success indeed.

in the midst of all the coffee and mimosa drinking, i wound up scavenging and finding this fantastic vintage high waist wool skirt! and guess whose second hand item it was? jessie's. go figure.

i love wearing this to work, because it looks sophisticated and polished, but also maintains style points. i love how it pops out at the waist slightly to give it that great 50's silhouette. it's also tricky to have a black, brown, tan and orange color scheme without it looking like bad 70's upholstery... but sometimes 70's upholstery can look damn good.

i can't stop watching this video. i can't get that feather covered, native american inspired full body leotard out of my head...i want to wear it.

old habits die hard

yes, it's true. i am back in my suspender phase. wait, actually i don't think i ever documented this on the blog--it may have been before the blog's time--but i had a hardcore suspender phase last spring/summer. i wore them with anything that i could make them to fasten to. haha.

i have also really been loving this little grey skirt with the pockets. it was a lucky f21 find and i love that you can dress it up or down easily (let's be honest though, i usually dress it down). i've worn it a million different ways, it is a great base for experimentation. also, the shirt is quickly becoming a favorite and i think everyone will be seeing lots more of it once spring finally gets going. it's just sheer enough that i can wear a black bra and not feel totally risque. love it.

danielle's 1st post--ahem, and favorite jeans.

okay so i'm new to this blogging business, but here goes...
i bought these amazing levi cords at a secondhand shop in my hood. they were still brand new with the tags on. SCORE!
they've since become my favorite go-to jeans for several reasons: they are sooo comfortable, they have a bit of stretch which makes the fit great, i love the stitching detail--western, but not honky tonk. i've been kind of trying to find my inner-cowgirl, but i'm not really ready to be chewing on straw...
what's also fun about these jeans, is that apparently they're a discontinued style in the u.s. by levis. i only learned this from a few lovely gals who stopped me on the street to demand, 'where on earth did you find those!?' one lass told me they still sell them, but only in japan. score city.

im wearing them here with a pair of badass high-top asics (like those wrestler sneaks..?). they're also a fav, but not pictured. you'll see them soon enough!

24 February 2009

ladies (and gentlemen), we have a new blogger!

surprise! we have a new blogger joining the team. i am super psyched to introduce you guys to my fabulous roommate danielle. most of you are already familiar with her (well at least her clothing and shoes-which i would usually steal and wear in my outfit posts). haha. d is an all-around amazing gal and i can't wait for you guys to get to know her and see her great style.

but that's not all...we have yet another new addition to our little blog. andrew michael casey has graciously agreed to photograph our shenanigans. andrew is a talented photographer based in brooklyn and i also can't wait for everyone to see more of his work. in fact, you should check out his site (andrewmichaelcasey.com) and get a better idea of where he's coming from and why we are so excited to be working with him.

so, expect to see some new faces and a new look (nothing drastic though, don't worry!) AND just to show you that not too much has changed, i leave you with some photographic proof of mine and danielle's silliness. nothing but good times ahead guys.

16 January 2009

the unintentional hiatus continues

i would apologize again for the lack of updates--but i believe that is becoming annoying. so, i am posting a pic of zooey deschanel as a peace offering (cause i really believe everyone in the entire world loves her) and i will just tell you guys what's going on.

kristin and i are trying to figure out the direction the blog will take in the coming year. we are not exactly sure what this looks like, whether it will be one of us blogging regularly and the other blogging only every now and again or whether it means taking the whole blog down (which i doubt we will do, don't worry).

soooo, in the meantime we hope to have all of this resolved by the beginning of february. cool?

also, thanks to everyone we've come in contact with/befriended/etc. this group of fashion bloggers include some of the most amazing people on the planet and we've had a blast getting to know you guys (and hope to meet many more of you in the future). thanks for keeping up with us and stay tuned...

market publique!

i know, i know--this is not an outfit post :( BUT it is about something just as fun, i promise!

susie bubble has a great post up about my good friends at market publique and their new vintage marketplace site that will be going up in the next couple of months. pamela and jon are fantastic people and the site is a great concept that focuses exclusively on the buying and selling of vintage clothing. there will be more info coming soon as they get things up and running--stop by and say hi to them, ask questions, etc.

be sure to keep an eye out for this one!
